SWINGING BRIDGE/ASSEMBLY PARK
Six acres of land were donated by E.S. Ellsworth in the late 1800s as a Baptist
assembly grounds. At one time a huge pavilion and dining hall hosted thousands
of visitors. At one time in the summer of 1902, over 200 tents were set up in the
park. The Red Path-Vawter circuit if the Chautauquas were held here until around
1918. In 1897 Commodore C.C. Bartlett and J.M. Eddy built the first swinging foot
bridge, to provide easy access to the Baptist Church back on the town square. The present Swinging Foot Bridge was
built in 1909 and rebuilt in 1925, 1956 and again in 1989.
